Lecture 4
Fichas del conjunto (8)
- 1Random variable-Takes on different numerical values based on chance of some event
-A variable that is subject to randomness, meaning it can take on different values - 2Discrete random variables-Can only assume a finite number of values or an infinite sequence of values (0,1,2..)
Many outcomes:
-Number of complains per day
-Number of TVs in household
Two outcomes:
-Gender
-Defective item: yes or no
-Game result: win or lose - 3Continuous random variables-Can assume an uncountable infinite number of values
Examples:
-Time taken to achieve a task
-The height of a tree - 4Expected valueThe mean of a probability distribution.
-The average value when the experiment that generates values for the random variable is repeated over the long run - 5Standard deviation-Measures the spread, or dispersion, in a set of data
-Measures the spread in the values of a random variable - 6Normal probability distributionA bell-shaped distribution with the following properties:
-It is uni-modal; that is, the normal distribution peaks at a single value
-It is symmetrical
-The mean, median, and mode are equal - 7Standard normal distributionA normal distribution that has a mean = 0.0 and standard deviation = 1.0
-The horizontal axis is scaled in z-values that measure the number of standard deviations a point is from the mean - 8Z-valueX value - mean
------------------------
Standard deviation
