About Random Variables and Probability Distributions
GoConqr OriginalWhat the resources cover
The unit moves from discrete random variables to continuous ones. The mind map Discrete Random Variable explains that a variable is discrete only when it takes a countable number of values. Discrete Probability Distributions then covers the binomial case: identical trials, two outcomes, success and failure.
Other maps carry on from there. Statistics 1 includes the geometric distribution, X~Geo(p), and the idea of going on until a success. Lec8 Binomial and Poisson Distributions covers the expected value and how to calculate probabilities. S2 - Chapter 1 to 5 lists the conditions for Poisson events: they occur singly, at a constant rate, independently and at random.
Where to start
- Begin with the mind map Discrete Random Variable to get the vocabulary.
- Move to Discrete Probability Distributions and Lec8 Binomial and Poisson Distributions.
- Read the Normal Distribution slide set, which shows how the mean sits in the middle and how a larger variance flattens the curve.
- Finish with the quiz Normal Approximation, which asks about approximating the binomial and the Poisson and about continuity corrections.
Using quizzes and maps together
Read a map first, then take a quiz on the same topic. Where you miss a question, go back to that branch of the map. There are separate quizzes on the geometric, Poisson, exponential and Bernoulli distributions, so you can check one idea at a time.
For Exam P candidates, the flashcard deck exam p distributions lists the discrete uniform, binomial, hypergeometric, geometric, negative binomial, Poisson, continuous uniform, exponential, gamma, normal, lognormal and beta distributions. The notes Probability & Statistics add the cumulative distribution function, skewness, kurtosis and the standard normal variate.
Where this unit fits
This unit sits in the Probability strand of Statistics and probability. Some resources mention A-level Maths, A-level Statistics and AP Statistics, so school students will find material pitched at their courses. Most of the unit, though, suits university study.
Choose one resource that matches what you are working on today, open it, and then try making a flashcard deck or map of your own.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with the mind map Discrete Random Variable if the topic is new to you. It sets out what makes a variable discrete. Then move to Discrete Probability Distributions for the binomial case. If you already know the basics, go straight to a quiz and see which questions you miss.
Which resources suit Exam P preparation?
The flashcard deck exam p distributions lists a long run of discrete and continuous distributions, from the discrete uniform to the beta. Quizzes on the Poisson, hypergeometric and negative binomial distributions and on continuous distributions can help you test what you have learnt.
Are there resources for A-level or AP Statistics?
Yes. Some listed resources mention A-level Maths, A-level Statistics, A-level Mathematics and AP Statistics. Look at the Statistics 1 mind map and the notes on Statistics 2 - S2 for chapter-style coverage of binomial, geometric, Poisson and normal distributions.
Do I need to pay or sign up to use these?
No. Every resource on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr. A free account lets you save quiz scores and make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
What do the quizzes on the normal distribution test?
The Normal Approximation quiz asks for the formulas used to approximate the binomial and the Poisson, and whether a continuity correction is needed. Other quizzes, such as The normal distribution and Normal Bell Curve, let you practise the shape and properties of the curve.
What if I cannot find a topic I need?
Try a nearby resource first, as many maps and decks cover several distributions at once. If the topic is still missing, you can make your own mind map, flashcards or quiz on it with a free account, and use the listed ones as a model.
