- 1What is an isotope?It is the various elements with the same number of protons but with varying number of neutrons.
- 2What is the atomic number?The number of protons and electrons in an atom.
- 3What is the atomic mass?The sum of both the protons and neutrons.
- 4What is an ion?An ion is an atom with more or less electrons than the number of protons leaving the atom with a net charge.
- 5What are the four steps of mass spectrometry?- Ionisation
- Acceleration
- Deflection
- Detection - 6What happens during ionisation?A vaporised sample is bombarded by a stream of high energy electrons produced by a heated coil knocking off an electron leaving the atoms positively charged.
- 7What happens during acceleration?The cations are then repelled by a positively charged plate into a highly charged ion chamber between plates differing by 10000 volts creating a concentrated ion beam.
- 8What happens during deflection?An electron magnet deflects the ion stream by varying the strength of the magnetic field, heavy ions are deflected less and ions with higher charge are deflected more.
- 9What happens during detection?The ion stream comes into contact with a metal box which donates elections to the ions creating a current within a wire which is amplified and recorded.
- 10How does mass spectrometry work?The mass/charge ratio that the ion stream being detected at a certain magnetic strength paired with the strength of the detected current give the abundance of the ion within the sample.
