  1. 1What are the 6 areas involved with designing a HCI?Colour
    Quantity of Information
    Layout
    Complexity of Language
    Font
    Controls
  2. 2What do designers need to consider regarding colours?House Styles
    Improving Functionality
    Are they appropriate?
    Colour Blindness
  3. 3What can colours be used for?Importance
    To demonstrate things
    To support people
    e.g. Red = Error/ Bad
    Green = Correct
  4. 4What do layouts need to be?Consistent.
The layout of a system should remain consistent. This will ease the transition from one system to another.
  5. 5What should be considered with the layout of tools? The location of tools should remain consistent across systems.
In terms of the icon, this should follow the standard format.
    e.g. printer for printing
  6. 6Where should error messages be displayed? They should be displayed in a location which is clear to the user and will demand their immediate attention.
  7. 7How is the quantity of information considered? The end user has to be taken into account.
Sometimes it is better to break up tasks over a series of screens.
  8. 8What are the problems with font size and style?Too big and work space becomes an issue.
Too small and the font is too hard to read.
It has to be an appropriate style font and also has to be readable.
  9. 9What should be considered with complexity of language? The end user has to be taken into account.
Assumptions should not be made that all users have the same level of reading skills.
  10. 10What are the different types of controls?Buttons
    Forms
    Menus
  11. 11What do buttons do?They allow complex tasks to be carried out very quickly.
Macros can be created which perform a number of tasks with just a click of a button.
This saves the user time as they have less repetitive tasks to carry out.
  12. 12What is a GUI?Graphics USer Interface
  13. 13What does Natural Language HCI allow the user to do?Allows the user to speak or type the instructions.
  14. 14Why is user profiling important? You need to know who your user is.
Different types of interfaces suit different needs.
  15. 15What principles need to be followed when designing a new system?The Principle of;
    User Profiling
    Metaphor
    Feature Exposure
    Coherence
    State Visualisation
    Shortcuts
    Focus
    Help
    Aesthetics
    User Testing
    Humility
  16. 16Why are Metaphors important?Borrowed behaviour from systems familiar to user.
    e.g. Printer icon to print
Complex systems can be made easier if they resemble a system a user is familiar with.
HOWEVER; different countries have different representations.
  17. 17What is Feature Exposure? How clearly the user can see what functions are available.
  18. 18What 2 types of users are there?Intuitives
    - Like things in a lodgical way e.g. command line and scripts.
    Sensibles
    - Like things up front and in their face,
  19. 19What is Coherence? This is the behaviour of a program being internally and externally consistent.
  20. 20What is Visualisation?Changes in behaviour should be reflected in the appearance of the program.
    e.g. The Cursor.
    - Arrow for selecting menu.
    - Hourglass whilst waiting.
  21. 21How are Shortcuts used? They provide concrete and abstract ways of getting a task done.
They provided easier ways for the user to complete actions.
The more a user uses an application the more familiar they become with it.
There are different levels to shortcuts.
  22. 22What are the different kinds of Help a user may need?Goal Orientated
    Descriptive
    Procedural
    Interpretive
    Navigational
  23. 23Where is help installed? When the cursor rests over an object
    In a help file
    In a user manual
    Step by Step wizard
    Online Help
  24. 24Why is the Aesthetics important?Icons should be neatly arranged and all the same sizes. This gives a professional look and easy to use.
  25. 25What is a Mental Model?A model that the end user creates in their mind based on preconceived ideas of how the system should work.
  26. 26How can a Mental Model be applied to the design of a user interface?- Mental models vary between users
    - The interface must reflect the perception of most users
    - Visual indicators such as red for bad and green for good can be incorporated by the designer into error messages
    - Audio indicators provide prompts for the user.
  27. 27Explain how the following can affect the design of an interface? - Attention - MemoryAttention:
    - Will be maintained through consistent use of colour and layout
    - Use of logical menus
    - Each screen being clearly labelled
    Memory:
    - The interface should be uncluttered
    - The customer will use the interface infrequently
    - Page layouts should remain consistent
    - Links to pre-existing knowledge
