Chapter 2 - Processor Performance
Fichas del conjunto (15)
- 1Processor PerformanceHow quickly the CPU can retrieve and interpret instructions.
- 2Clock SpeedMeasure in hertz, it is the number of cycles completed every second.
- 3CoresAnother term for processors. The more you have, the more cycles you can run through per second.
- 4CacheA small but expensive piece of very fast memory inside the CPU.
- 5Level 1 CacheDoesn't just work as instruction cache but also holds pre-decoded data and branching information.
- 6Level 2 CacheA memory bank built into the processor feeding level 1 cache but is slower.
- 7Level 3 CacheServes all processors and stores frequently used data to prevent bottlenecks from fetching from main memory.
- 8Main MemoryCommonly known as RAM, it is the main storage used by the CPU to hold data on applications currently being run.
- 9PipeliningAllows the arithmetic element of the processor to work along side the fetch process allowing for more instructions to be completed.
- 10BitsAn electrical signal represented as 1 or 0. 1 for on and 0 for off. Used by computers to read data.
- 11BytesA byte is 8 bits.
- 12HertzClock speed is measure in hertzs. It is how many cycles are completed per second.
- 13Assembly LanguageBasic low-level machine code.
- 14OpcodeUsed to determine the type of instruction and what hardware to use.
- 15OperandHolds the address of the data to be used, the actual data to be operated on or the data to be operated on may be passed to the ALU.
