- 1What 4 factors affect CPU performance?1. Clock Speed
2. Cache Memory
3. The Amount of Cores
4. The GPU - 2Name the 6 components of the CPU1. Registers like PC, MAR, MDR, CIR
2. The arithmetic logic unit (ALU)
3. The control unit (CU)
4. Main memory or immediate access store(IAS)
5. The accumulator
6. The general purpose registers - 3What is the function of the CU?1. Manages the execution of instructions:
(fetch, decode, execute)
a) To communicate these, buses are used - 4What does the ALU do?1. Manages the arithmetic and comparison instructions
2. All inputs and outputs pass through before being directed to other parts of the CPU - 5What does the accumulator do?1. Holds the data being currently processed
2. All I/O goes through it - 6Why are registers helpful to the CPUs functions?1. They are used to check the progress of instruction and data as time moves on
2. They provide temporary storage space
3. They operate at the speed of the processor - 7What order are the different registers used in?1. Program Counter (PC) - keeps track of where the current code is whilst it is being executed
2. Memory Access Register (MAR) - receives the address of the data/instructions that are fetched from or stored to from the PC and stores it
3. Memory Data Register (MDR) - holds the data that has been fetched
4. Current Instruction Register (CIR) - stores most recently fetched instruction, before the decode and execution part
5. Memory Buffer Register (MBR) - holds data being transferred to and from the IAS and has a copy of the address stored in the MAR
6. General Purpose Registers - stores data in use (temporary store), they help to speed up processing - 8What do buses do to convey information?1. Control Bus - sends control signals from the CU to the rest of the processor
2. Data Bus - carries data from one register to another
3. Address Bus - carries the location address to tell the data bus where to put the data
4. Local Bus - controls the large flow of data to secondary storage
5. Universal Serial Bus (USB) - transfers data from the computer to external devices - 9What were the components of the Von Neumann architecture?1. One processor
2. Process instructions sequentially
3. Instructions and data stored in memory together
4. Instructions and data transported on the same data bus at different times (causes a VN bottleneck) - 10What did the Harvard architecture do differently? They split the data and instructions:
Separate memory
Different buses
Increased efficiency - 11What happens in parallel processing?A computer carries multiple computations at the same time in order to solve just one problem is processing in parallel, the aim being that by working as a team the problem can be solved more quickly (which isn’t quite the case)
- 12What happens in distributed processingSame as parallel but it doesn't use a LAN or the internet (whereas parallel does)
- 13How efficient are these methods of processing?Up until the point you have too many resources for your problems, they are effective
If a problem requires a calculation from the previous cpu then f*** all can be done - 14Why are RISC and CISC put together?Because they are the opposite of eachother
- 15What does CISC stand for and do?1. Complex Instruction Set Computing
2. Allows the processor to have more instructions in its instruction set (i.e. dividing and multiplying in python) - 16What does RISC stand for and do?1. Reduced Instruction Set Computing
2. Less instructions but it makes up with more 'general purpose' registers
