  1. 1Headland landform How are caves formed?Weak areas of a
    headland are attacked by waves
and opened to form a cave.
  2. 2Headland landform How are arches formed?Caves are widened and deepened by
subaerial and cliff top processes to form
    an arch.
  3. 3Headland landform How are stacks formed? As the roof of the arch is
    continually undercut it
    eventually collapses leaving an
    isolated stack.
  4. 4Headland landform How are stumps formed? The continual erosion of a stack leads to the creation of a stump.
  5. 5Give an example of stack.Old Harry
    The 12 Aposteles
  6. 6What is a concordant coastline?Concordant coastlines have the same rock along their length.
  7. 7Give an example of a Cove found on a concordant coastline.Lulworth Cove, Dorset.
  8. 8How was this cove formed?#1 A small crack in limestone was eroded by the sea.
#2 Lateral erosion occured easily as the clay is soft rock, forming a cove.
#3 Once the hard rock was met again, the erosion stopped.
  9. 9What are discordant coastlines?Coastlines where the
geology alternates between strata of hard
    and soft rock.
  10. 10What landforms are typically found at discordant coastlines? Why is this?Bays and headlands; this is because the soft rock erodes quickly whilst the hard rock is left projecting into the sea as headlands.
  11. 11Give an example of a discordant coastline.Part of the Dorset coastline in Purbeck
running north from the Portland limestone
of Durlston Head is an example of a
    discordant coastline.
  12. 12Describe the features of the Purbeck coastline. The 60 square miles area is home to
the largest natural harbour in the UK-
    Poole Harbour, and many tourist
    attractions like Swanage Bay.
  13. 13How are headlands and bays formed? Draw a labelled diagram. How are headlands and bays formed? Draw a labelled diagram.
  14. 14What are spits?Long, narrow ridges of sand
and shingle which project from the coastline into the sea.
  15. 15Give an example of a Spit.Spurnhead spit, Holderness Coast.
  16. 16Where do spits form? They develop where there is a sudden change in the shape of the coastline such as at a headland.
  17. 17Explain the formation of a spit. When the shape of the coastline changes substantially, longshore drift continues to transport material in the same direction rather than following the coastline.
This transports the material out to sea. As the strength of the drift weakens away from the coastline, the sediment is deposited.
  18. 18What gives spits their curved shape? The shape of the spit changes as a result of wave refraction. Refraction around the end of a spit curves it into a “hook” forming a recurved spit.
The sheltered area provides the perfect environment for salt marshes.
  19. 19What are Bars?Where spits grow across a bay,
    joining two headlands.
  20. 20What landforms do Bars create?Bars block off an area of sea, creating a
lagoon which will slowly be infilled by
    deposition.
  21. 21What are offshore bars?Deposits of sand and shingle
    situated some distance from the
    shore.
  22. 22Where do offshore bars form? They form in shallow seas
    where waves break some
    distance from the shore
  23. 23When are offshore bars visible?Low tide; this is because they usually lie just below sea level but become exposed at low tide.
  24. 24What is a tomobolo?A ridge of beach material that
    connects an island to the
    mainland
  25. 25Name one example of a Tomobolo.Chesil Beach, Dorset.
  26. 26What is a barrier beach? An elongated bank of deposited sand or
shingle lying parallel to the coastline
  27. 27How are barrier beaches formed? They form when an offshore bar rises above sea level
  28. 28State 2 examples of barrier beaches.#1 Miami Beach, Florida.
    #2 Lido di Venezia, Venice
