About Coastal Processes and Landforms

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The listed resources follow the coast from process to landform to management. The mind map Geography - AQA - GCSE - Physical - Coasts breaks processes into erosion types such as hydraulic action, corrasion and attrition, then moves on to landforms and case studies. Waves and Tides and Weathering and Mass movement cover the forces behind it all.

Landforms and case studies

For landforms, look at Coastal Landforms, the flowchart on the sea arch and stack, and the flashcards on caves, arches, stacks and stumps. Depositional features are covered in the notes on beaches and the notes titled Spits.

Case studies are well represented. There are several on the Holderness Coast, plus Barton-on-sea, Swanage, Medmerry and Christchurch bay, the Keyhaven saltmarsh notes and the Ynyslas sand dunes notes. Some resources also cover Mauritius and Kiribati.

Where to start

  1. Open The Coastal Zone or coastal landscapes for the big picture.
  2. Read the notes on longshore drift and the notes on beaches.
  3. Move to landforms made by erosion, then deposition.
  4. Finish with management and case studies.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a mind map first, then test yourself. The Coastal management quiz asks about hard and soft engineering, groynes and beach nourishment. The Coastal Geography Quiz uses fill-in-the-blank questions on spits and wave types. When an answer is wrong, go back to the matching map branch and note the gap on a flashcard.

Teachers can set a map as pre-reading and a quiz as a starter. Exam boards mentioned across the resources include AQA, Edexcel and the general GCSE and A-level courses, so check titles against your own specification.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with a broad mind map such as The Coastal Zone or coastal landscapes. They lay out waves, erosion, transport, deposition and management in one view. Then try the Coastal management quiz or the Coastal Geography Quiz to see which areas need more work.

What do the mind maps cover?

They cover coastal processes, erosion types, waves and tides, weathering and mass movement, landforms from erosion and deposition, and management. Many are case studies, including Holderness, Barton-on-sea, Swanage, Medmerry and Christchurch bay, so you can match them to your course.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr itself, so it's worth checking them against your class notes or specification.

Which exams do these resources suit?

The resources mention GCSE Geography, AQA GCSE Geography, A-level Geography, AQA A-level Geography and Edexcel AS Geography. Most are at school level, so they suit GCSE and A-level students, and teachers can pick items that fit their course.

What if I can't find the topic I need?

Search the other titles on the page, since coasts are often split into processes, landforms, management and case studies. If something is still missing, you can make your own notes, mind map, flashcards or quiz with a free account, which also saves your quiz scores.

Are there flashcards for key terms?

Yes. There are over 500 flashcards on the page, including decks such as Key Coastal Terms, coastal zone keywords and Formation of caves, arches, stacks, stumps. Use them after a mind map to practise definitions and landform sequences.
