- 1What is a computer network?A computer network is a set of computers connected together for the purpose of sharing resources.
- 2Describe a LANA Computer network that links devices within a building or group of adjacent buildings especially one with a radius of less than 1km.
- 3Describe a WANa computer network in which the computers connected may be far apart, generally having a radius of more than 1 km.
- 4What are the advantages of a computer network?a file server can be used to store and share documents and files centrally.
electronic messages (email) can be sent between computers. - 5What are the disadvantages of a computer network?High setup cost. Data security threat.
- 6What devices are needed to produce a LAN?Hub/Switch Wireless Access Point Router Network Interface Card
- 7What is the purpose of a NIC?Needed by all devices such as desktops and laptops computers to connect to a network
Will either support wired or wireless connections. - 8What is the purpose of a Router?Used to connect different networks together. A home and business may use this device to connect to connect their network to another network such as the internet.
- 9What is the purpose of a Hub?Have multiple ports to connect computer into.
Used to physically link computers using cables. - 10What is the purpose of a Switch?Have multiple ports to connect computer into.
Used to physically link computers using cables. - 11What is the purpose of a WAP?Required to allow wireless devices to connect a wired network.
They convert data from cables into wireless signals. - 12What is the difference between a Hub and a Switch?Hub:
Connects electronic devices together.
Sends data to all devices on a network.
Cheap and simple
switch:
Connects electronic devices together
Sends data to specific devices on a network.
More advanced version of a hub.
More efficient. - 13What are the three different network topologies? They are Bus Ring Star
- 14What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Star topology?Advantages:
It is very reliable – if one cable or device fails then all the others will continue to work
it is fast and efficient as no data collisions can occur
Disadvantages: it is expensive to install as this type of network uses the most cable (network cable is expensive)
extra hardware is required (hubs or switches) which adds to cost
if a hub or switch fails, all the devices connected to it will have no network connection - 15What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Ring topology?Advantages
Speed: Fast. Data transfers quickly, even if there are a large number of devices connected because the data only flows in one direction, so there won’t be any data collisions.
Cheap to set up. No additional hardware needed
Disadvantages
Unreliable: If one computer goes down, it affects all others on the ring - 16What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Bus topology?Advantages
Easy installation
Cheap. Single cable.
Easy to add/remove devices
Disadvantages
Unreliable: If the main cable fails the network goes down
Slow Speed: The more workstations, the slower the connection speed due to increased traffic
Security: Data travels to all computers. Risk of interception
