  1. 1What is a computer network?A computer network is computers which is connected together to share resources e.g the school computers.
  2. 2Describe a LANA local-area network connects the computer hardware in a localized area. LAN's use wired connections to link the computers to each other.
  3. 3Describe a WANA computer network that spans a relatively large geographical area. A WAN consists of two or more local-area networks (LAN's).
  4. 4What are the advantages of a computer network?-It is easier to access things.
-You will be able to access files that you may need.
  5. 5What are the disadvantages of a computer network?-If one computer gets a virus, all the computers could get it.
-Your private files could be accessed.
  6. 6What devices are needed to produce a LAN?To set up a LAN, you will need:
    -A network switch - or a router
    - Cables
    - A computer
    - All the rest of your devices
    - A broadband connection
    - A modem (if there isn't one built in to your router).
  7. 7What is the purpose of a NIC?A Network Interface Card is needed by all devices such as desktops, laptops and computers to connect to a network.
  8. 8What is the purpose of a Router?A router is used to physically link computers using cables.
  9. 9What is the purpose of a Hub/Switch?A Switch/Hub may be used by homes and businesses to connect their network to another network such as the internet.
  10. 10What is the purpose of a WAP?A wireless access point (WAP) is a hardware device that allows wireless devices and wired networks to connect through a wireless standard, including Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. A WAP is also known as a hotspot.
  11. 11What is the purpose of a web browser? If you want to view web pages on different websites, you will need to use a program called a 'browser'. This acts as your door to the internet. Browsers are all slightly different, but they all allow you to 'surf' the internet and access different websites.
  12. 12What is the difference between a Hub and a Switch?A switch is used to connect various network segments. A network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple computers together within one local area network (LAN). A Hub connects multiple Ethernet devices together, making them act as a single segment.
  13. 13What is the internet? The internet is a global network of computers.
  14. 14.What is the World Wide Web?The World Wide Web ( "WWW" or "The Web" ) is the part of the Internet that contains websites and webpages.
  15. 15What is the purpose of an ISP?An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that provides Internet access to companies, families, and even mobile users.
  16. 16What is an IP address? An IP address is a label which is used to identify one or more devices on a computer network, such as the internet. An IP address is a long number written in binary.
  17. 17What is a URL?The address of a World Wide Web page.
  18. 18How is a URL constructed? The easiest way to create a URL object is from a String that represents the human-readable form of the URL address.
  19. 19What is the difference between a URL and an IP address?URL is an address that humans can understand ( because it is in words ). IP is something computers can understand ( because it is in numbers )..
  20. 20Explain the role of the DNSThe main function of DNS is to translate URL's into IP Addresses, which computers can understand.
  21. 21What are the three different network topologies?Bus topology,
    Star topology,
    Ring topology.
  22. 22What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Star topology?ADVANTAGES
    - Easy to install and wire.
    - No disruptions to the network when connecting or removing devices.
    - Easy to detect faults and to remove parts.
    DISADVANTAGES
    - Requires more cable length than a linear topology.
    - If the hub, switch, or concentrator fails, nodes attached are disabled.
    - More expensive than linear bus topologies because of the cost of the hubs, etc.
  23. 23What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Ring topology?ADVANTAGES
    - All data flows in one direction, reducing the chance of packet collisions.
    - A network server is not needed to control network connectivity between each workstation.
    - Data can transfer between workstations at high speeds.
    - Additional workstations can be added without impacting performance of the network.
    DISADVANTAGES
    - All data being transferred over the network must pass through each workstation on the network, which can make it slower than a star topology.
    - The entire network will be impacted if one workstation shuts down.
    - The hardware needed to connect each workstation to the network is more expensive than Ethernet cards and hubs/switches.
  24. 24What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Bus topology?ADVANTAGES
    Easy to install and wire.
No disruptions to the network when connecting or removing devices.
Easy to detect faults and to remove parts.
    DISADVANTAGES
Entire network shuts down if there is a break in the main cable.
Terminators are required at both ends of the backbone cable.
Difficult to identify the problem if the entire network shuts down.
Not meant to be used as a stand-alone solution in a large building.
  25. 25List examples of data that need to be kept securePasswords
    Personal Pictures
    Messages
    Files
  26. 26What is a Pigpen Cipher? The pigpen cipher is a specific type of written code that uses a variety of symbols made from spatial constructs to represent letters of an alphabet, rather than replacing one alphabetic letter with another, versus traditional ciphers.
  27. 27What is a Caesar Cipher? The Caesar Cipher is just like the Pigpen Cipher but has a different code. Julius Caesar use this to send secret messages and that's why it's called a CAESAR cipher.
  28. 28What is encryption?Encryption is a process that encodes a message or file so that it can be only be read by certain people. Encryption uses an algorithm to scramble, or encrypt, data and then uses a key for the receiving party to unscramble, or decrypt, the information.
  29. 29What is decryption? The conversion of encrypted data into its original form is called Decryption. It is generally a reverse process of encryption. It decodes the encrypted information so that an authorized user can only decrypt the data because decryption requires a secret key or password.
  30. 30Why encrypt data?Encryption is important because it allows you to securely protect data that you don't want anyone else to have access to.
