  1. 1What are resources?Main elements in the organisation of software projects
Personnel - Analysts, Programmers - ensuring the availability of appropriately trained staff
Hardware - ensuring the availability of appropriate Hardware
Software - Ensuring the availability of appropriate Software
Budget - Ensuring there is an appropriate budget
  2. 2What are the constraints?A constraint is a restriction or limit with project
    Available budget-Identifies maximum spending amount
Required development time-identifies deadlines that must be met
The need to integrate with other IT systems e.g with different OS systems
    he software development expertise available
  3. 3What is a risk?A factor which could have a detrimental effect on the success of a project which could cause the system to fail to meet its objectives
Scheduling-Task might take too long:this could mean tasks depending on its completion may not be able to start on schedule
Budget exceeded - means the software may not be developed until financial constraints are resolved
Staffing/personnel issues-key member of staff may be unavailable when required: means tasks may not be able to start on time
  4. 4Why is monitoring needed?-It's important that all key activities are monitored so that the Project manager (PM) is constantly aware of progress and apply timely interventions in times of difficultly
-Progress reports from team managers help provide the PM with an overview of the project although alternative approaches including regular meetings or diaries can be used
-Based on their findings from reports etc. PM may use that info to help keep the project on schedule
  5. 5Why is scheduling needed?-Late delivery of projects can be costly and the PM needs to ensure that key deadlines are met
-Key factors to consider when scheduling include considering the interdependency of tasks, task sequencing and parallelism i.e. which tasks depend on the outcome of others and the order to be completed
-Unrealistic deadlines can be destructive to project progress]
-Other destructive influences which may impact include changing customer requirements and human/technical difficulties
  6. 6Why is the budget needed?-Clients want to know how much the solution will cost and the PM needs to ensure the budget is not exceeded
-Budget place a constraint on he project and needs to take in consideration man hours, software/hardware requirements etc.
-If a project runs the risk of running behind it will have an impact on the cost
-A PM is expected to work within the constraints of the available budget
  7. 7Why are resources needed-Resources are considered to be the people, equipment, facilities and anything else necessary for the successful completion of a project.
-Effective scheduling and deployment of resources us necessary for guaranteed
    completion of a project.
-Resources should be allocated based on priority assigned to project component
  8. 8What is a Gantt chart?-Similar to a bar chart
    -It identifies each projects activity
    -and its planned start time
    -and its finishing time
-It shows the current progress of the project with a vertical bar
  9. 9What is Critical Path Analysis?-A model of the project is made showing each activity as a node and the dependencies between the activities
-A mathematical algorithm is used to calculate the earliest/latest start and finish time for each activity
-The algorithm identifies the chain of activities critical to projects schedule
-CPA identifies the most efficient way of ensuring the projects schedule is met with optimal use of resources
-May not be suitable for small scale projects
  10. 10Evaluate Gantt Charts-Helps eliminate idle time in project
-Provides clarity:allows all elements to be displayed on a single page
    -Aids time management
-Provides motivation for team members ad the focus will be on the deadline
x- May be misleading: size of bar doesn't reflect the amount of work
x- can be complex for larger projects
  11. 11Evaluate Critical Path Analysis-Dependencies are shown visually
-Supports effient allocation of resources and hence cost
-Helps make impact of schedule revision more visible
x- Can be difficult for larger projects
  12. 12What is version management? It is the monitoring of changes to a system during the development process
  13. 13How is Version management carried out?-The development team must all be working from the same version
    -All changes must be recorded
-Must be a method of tracking and reversing changes
-All documents + code modules should have version numbers
-Old versions of documents and code should be achieved(not deleted)
