- 1Charles DarwinCreated the Theory of Natural Selection
- 2Natural SelectionThe process through which populations of living organisms adapt and change
- 3The 5 rules1. All species have inherited genetic variation
2. Organisms produce more offspring than can survive
3. There is competition for finite environmental resources
4. Survival of the fittest
5. Descent with modification - 4rule #1All species have inherited genetic information. Every organism that is sexually produced is genetically different from the other
- 5rule #2Organisms produce more offspring than can survive. This means that there are more organisms than the environment can support. Those that are better physically equipped survive, grow to maturity and reproduce
- 6rule #3There is competition for limited resources. Since there aren’t enough resources to support every organism, competition for resources is present.
- 7rule #4Survival of the fittest. Organisms best adjusted to their environment are the most successful in surviving and reproducing.
- 8rule #5Descent with Modification of Populations. The organisms which survive eventually pass along the characteristics which helped them survive. Therefore over generations, those characteristics will become more relevant in the species.
- 9Fossil recordsThe remains/imprints of organisms from earlier geological periods preserved in sedimentary rock
- 10Lower layerOlder fossil
- 11Index fossilUsed for relativity in relation to the other fossils to determine age
- 12Almost all fossils are preserved in thisSedimentary rock
- 13GradualismSlow, gradual change of a species over time
- 14Punctuated equilibriumThere are long periods of time with little to no change and then rapid spurts of evolutionary change occur
- 15HomologyThe state of having the same or similar relation, relative position, or structure
