UNIT 1 (1.2)
Processor/CPU: The CPU of a computer is a piece of hardware that carries out the instructions of a computer program. It performs the basic arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations of a computer system.
Motherboards: A motherboard is one of the most essential parts of a computer system. It holds together many of the crucial components of a computer, including the central processing unit (CPU), memory and connectors for input and output devices.
Hard drive: A disk drive used to read from and write to a hard disk. It saves Files etc to the hard drive.
solid state drivde: A solid-state drive uses a type of memory called flash memory, which is similar to RAM. This also stores data to the device it is used in so for e.g. tablets.
Flash memory: A USB memory stick is a data storage device that includes flash memory with an integrated USB interface. So for example (depending on how much storage you have on the flash memory), you have a 32gb memory stick that means you can only put up to 32 GB worth of data inside.
NAS Network attached storage: NAS is a file-level computer data storage server connected to a computer network providing data access to a wide range group of clients. NAS is good for serving files either by its hardware, software, or configuration.
Firewire: FireWire is a way to connect different pieces of equipment so they can easily and quickly share information. So for example computer to computer using the firewire extension. Speed? 800mbp
SATA: Serial AT Attachment is a computer bus interface that connects host bus adapters to mass storage devices such as hard disk drives, optical drives, and solid-state drives. Speed? 3GB/S & 6GB/S
USB cables: USB short for Universal Serial Bus, is an industry standard that defines cables, connectors and communications protocols for connection, communication, and power supply between computers and devices.
Network cable/Ehternet cable: An ethernet cable is used to provide a device with internet connection. You have to plug it from the router to a device. This can be for devices that do not have wireless/ WIFI connection built in it. What speeds can they reach? 1000MBPS
Networking cable-fibre optic: e-optic communication is a method of transmitting information from one place to another by sending pulses of light through an optical fibre. Super fast. Sends data over long distances. Little interference from phones or other electrical devices. More secure because it is difficult to TAP into, you need special equipment. Expensive compared to wireless copper. Difficult to connect, you need specialised equipment. Optical fibre is used by many telecommunications companies to transmit telephone signals, Internet communication, and cable television signals.
Random access memory: Random access memory is a form of computer data storage which stores frequently used program instructions to increase the general speed of a system.
Memory cache:A CPU cache is a hardware cache used by the central processing unit (CPU) of a computer to reduce the average cost, time or energy to access data from the main memory. A cache is a smaller, faster memory, closer to a processor core, which stores copies of the data from frequently used main memory locations. How much Cache memory does a top end CPU have? What impact does it have on the CPU? A top end CPU would have 25mb. It makes the memory faster.
