Working memory model

  • Schmlock
  1. CENTRAL EXECUTIVE - responsible for organising memories and allocates them to other slave systems

    • Retrieves info from LTM or from 5 senses and assigns to loop or VSSP for processing. It has non-specific modality
  2. PHONOLOGICAL LOOP

    • ARTICULATORY LOOP- voices info that you are rehearsing and holds onto memory of sounds
      • Subvocalising- talking to yourself.
    • PHONOLOGICAL STORE- acts as inner ear
      • Holds information in speech form
  3. VISUAL SPATIAL SKETCHPAD -inner eye

    • Handling visual and spatial info. Stores info on how things look and allows us to recreate images.
  4. EPISODIC BUFFER- back up store

    • Linking and storing info.
    • Binds and weaves memories into single episodes.
  5. CREDIBILITY

    • Backed up with brain scans showing visual and acoustic encoding in diff parts of the brain
    • Face validity- matches up with what we feel when we remember things
    • dual task paradigm- individual performing two tasks at the same time. WMM explains this
    • KF case study- brain damage from motorbike accident (STM affected). His verbal info affected but visual not affected. This shows visual is seperate in processing from verbal info.
  6. CONTRADICTING ( DIFFERENCES) Multi store model focuses on sensory, stm and ltm and the encoding, duration and capacity. Whereas WWM focuses on a more complex idea of STM.

  7. APPLICATION TO REAL LIFE- how to improve our memory in some situations. Suggests you can concentrate on 2 different coded sources at the same time. It can help people with dementia.
