The Periodic Table

  1. Metals

    • Sonorous (ring when hit)
    • Conducts electricity
    • Conductor of heat
    • High density
    • Malleable
    • Ductile
    • Shiny
  2. Non-metals

    • Dull
    • Brittle
    • Never Ductile
    • Never magnetic
    • Never malleable
    • Low density
    • Poor conductors of heat
    • Poor conductor of electricity
    • Never Sonorous
  3. Groups and Periods

    • Groups: Vertical Columns
    • Periods: Horizontal Rows
    • Elements have different physical and chemical properties to each other.
    • Group 1
      • From top to bottom of the group, the boiling point and melting point decreases
      • From bottom to top of the group, the vigour of the reaction with water decreases
      • All Group 1 elements react with water to make a hydrogen and alkaline solution.
      • Called the 'Alkaline Metals'
      • Low densities
      • Conduct electricity
    • Group 7
      • Called the 'Halogens'
      • They are non-metals
      • From top to bottom of the group, the melting and boiling point increases
      • All Group 7 elements are reactive
      • The vigour of the reactions increase from bottom to top
      • They do not conduct electricity
      • The colour darkens from top to bottom
      • The elements are: Flourine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine and Astetine
    • Group 0 (8)
      • Very low melting and boiling points
      • Colourless Gases
      • They glow brightly when high voltage electricity is passed through them - used in advertising signs
      • Mostly unreactive, but they do get slightly more reactive down the group
