1. The core software that controls how a computer operates.

2. Examples of OS's(Windows,Linux, Unix,iOS and Android)

   • The user interface allows a person to interact with the computer.Examples are:The menu interface,command line interface and GUI.
     • Menu-based interfaces are useful when a computer is intended to only handle a small number of tasks.
       • Command Line Interface-A command line allows the user to interact directly with the computer system by typing in commands.

3. Operating systems need to:

   • Provide security-such as a user name and password control.

4. Manage software, in terms of loading (and unloading) into a main memory.

5. Provide a user interface, to allow a person to interact with the computer.

   • A GUI (Graphical User Interface) is a way for people to interact with the computer because it makes use of pictures,graphicsand icons,hence the name graphical.

6. Control the hardware of the computer system.e.g hard disk, graphics card, mouse.

7. A multi-tasking operating system allows more than one program to run at the same time.

8. Examples of multi-tasking operating systems:

   • Windows,OS X and Android.
     • PARTS OF AN OPERATING SYSTEM

9. A multi-tasking operating systems arranges for every process in memory to run in the CPU.

10. Operating systems keep data secure and safe.
