Conjunctivitis
- Ectropion: Mild conjunctivitis from exposure.
Worst affected should have lid shortnening
- Follicular: Hypertrophy of lymphoid
follicles
- Opthalmia neonatorum: Infected conjunctival sac before eyelids open.
Eyelid swelling +/- small amount of pus.TREAT PROMPTLY risk of
corneal ulceration and penetration
- Allergic: Generalised atopy or local.
Single eosinophil on cytology =
diagnostic. Intermittent topical
steroids/antihistamines/mast cell
stabilisers OR single parenteral
short-acting corticosteroid dose in
immediate hypersensitivity.
- Non-specific: Acute and self-limiting.
Opportunistic gram +ve infection to
compromised tissue which fusidic acid
effective against.
- Chronic: Generalised disease.
Marginal tear production, seborrhoea,
pyoderma, otitis externa, ectropion
are associated. Cyclosporin in
marginal tear production cases. Tx:
symptomatic
