STORAGE DEVICES

STORAGE DEVICES

1. Magnetic

   • Advantages
     • It has a lot of security
     • It has many people who support this type of device
     • For several reasons, it has been on sale and this causes it to have people back it up at being stable
     • The biggest advantage of magnetic disk storage over main memory is persistence of data
     • It has the ability to fit a tremendous amount of data into a small space
     • The magnetic storage device price has been made cheaper than before
   • Examples
     • Magnetic Tape
     • Hard Disk
     • Floppy Disk
   • Disadvantages
     • Special equipment must be purchased and setup for recording and storing data. The data can only be read on the special equipment
     • If the data is near a strong magnetic field or a large speaker, the magnetic tape can be damaged
     • Magnetic tape has a lifespan of 15 years. Data quality gradually erodes over time
     • It is necessary to keep older tape equipment just to b able to read the stored data

2. Solid State

   • Advantages
     • It has more reliability
     • It does not have moving parts so if you were to drop it, it is less likely to stop working.
     • It is more durable than a hard disk drive
     • It is faster than a hard disk drive
     • When it is in operation, it makes no background noises
   • Examples
     • Phones
   • Disadvantages
     • It has limited storage capacity
     • It has poor availabiliy
     • It has high costs

3. Optical

   • Disadvantages
     • The cost per gigabyte of storage is higher for optical media
     • The transfer speed is not as fast as magnetic disks
     • Other than in certain cases such as rewrite media, once the media has been written to it cannot be erased and have something new written to it
   • Advantages
     • It is very cheap
     • Large storage capacity is available
     • Optical disks are solid and harder to break
     • They can easily distribute optical media
   • Examples
     • CD ROM Devices
     • Flash drive
     • DVD Devices
     • RDX
