Secondary Storage
It is non-volatile storage. It is needed in a computer system to your programs, Operating systems and files.
- Non-volatile means that the data is not deleted when the computer system has no power connected to it
Optical storage
- Blu-Ray
- DVD
- Advantages: Optical storage is very cost effective and portable compared to magnetic or solid state storage.
- Disadvantages: It can shatter easily unlike Solid State storage where there is no moving parts and it does not hold much storage capacity.
Magnetic storage
- Disadvantages: Magnetic storage has moving parts making it less durable and less portable compared to solid state.
- Advantage: very high storage compared to solid state.
- Magnetic storage is also very cost effective as it has a low cost per GB.
- Disadvantages: slower read/ write speed than solid state.
Solid State storage
- USB drive
- Very fast read/ write speed compared to magnetic storage
- It is also very durable as it has no moving parts whereas optical and magnetic storage do.
- Does not have as much storage capacity as magnetic
- Is not as cost effective as magnetic because it has a higher cost per GB
