Born in Russia 14-9-1849
Early studies - Theology
After reading Darwin's 'Origin of the species' devoted himself to Science
He joined the Natural Sciences Uni of St Petersberg in 1870
Primary Interests: Psychology & Natural Sciences
Helped found Dept of Physiology in Inst of Experimental medicine.
Oversaw for 45 years
Originally his studies were nothing to do with Psychology
He focussed on the ways in which eating excited salivary, gastric & Pancreatic secretions
Fistula in dogs throat so food never got to the stomach
Study won him Nobel Prize in 1904 in Physiology/Medicine
Dogs became irreplaceable to Pavlov, but only in a selfish way
Treatment was inhumane & would cause an outcry in modern society
A bell or metronome was used(conditioned stimulus)
Meat(unconditioned stimulus) in dogs mouth
Dog starts to salivate at sound of bell/metronome ( Conditioned response)
Classical conditioning has occurred.
Physiologist not a Psychologist
His study influenced further behaviour therapy techniques, such as flooding and desensitizing to treat fear and anxiety
