Computer Components

  1. CPU

    • Central Processing Unit
      • The CPU of a computer is a piece of hardware that carries out the instructions of a computer program.
    • It performs the basic arithmetic, logical, and input/output operations of a computer system
      • The CPU is measured in GHz which is also known as clock speed. This means that a 1 GHz single core CPU will be able to do 1 billion calculations per second
  2. Motherboard

    • A motherboard is one of the most essential parts of a computer system. It holds together many of the crucial components of a computer, including the CPU, memory and input/output connectors
    • It connects the different components of a computer to a CPU so that it can process desired user requests and provide results
  3. Network Card

    • A Network Interface Card connects to a computer to a local data network or the internet. The card translates computer data into electrical signals it sends through the network. The signals are compatible with the network so computers can reliably exchange information
  4. Memory

    • RAM
      • Random Access Memory makes it possible to find specific information very quickly. It is a form of fast-access, volatile storage that is used as the main memory in computer systems
    • ROM
      • Read-only memory is used to store the start-up instructions for a computer. Most modern computers use flash-based ROM
  5. GPU

    • A Graphics Processing Unit is a programmable logic chip specialized for display functions. The GPU renders images, animations and videos for the computer's screen.
    • GPUs are located on plug-in cards, in a chipset on the motherboard ar in the same chip as the CPU
  6. Storage

    • SSD
      • Solid State Drive is a type of mass storage device similar to HDD. It supports reading and writing data and maintains stored data in a permanent state even without power.
    • HDD
      • Non-volatile memory hardware device that permanantly stores and retrieves data on a computer
  7. System Cooling

    • The cooling system removes excess heat from the computer system whilst it is running
    • The objective of the cooling system is to maintain an optimal operating temperature and this can be achieved through various different methods
