Topic 5- The Nervous System
What is The Nervous System?
- it is a network of nerve cells that allows humans to react to their surroundings and coordinate their behaviour
- It carries very fast electrical impulses so you can react quickly to your environment
Parts of The Nervous System
- Central Nervous System (CNS)
- consists of the brain and spine
- Motor Neurones
- The long axon to carry nerve impulses from one part of the body to another
- neurones that carry electrical impulses from the CNS to the effectors
- Sensory Neurones
- lots of dendrites to make more connections
- neurones that carry information as electrical impulses from the receptors to the CNS
- Central Nervous System (CNS)
Synapses
- the connection between to neurones is called a synapse
- the nerve signal is transferred by chemicals which diffuse across the gap
- these chemicals send off a new electrical signal in the next neurone
Pathways of the Nervous system
- voluntary/concious action
- brain can control
- reflex action/unconcious action
- brain cannot control
- voluntary/concious action
