Module 7.2 Nervous system
The nervous system is a communication network that has controls over all the other systems in your body.
Nervous system is a communication network that has controls on the other body systems.
Two parts of nervous system
Central Nervous system (CNS)
Make up your brain and spinal cord.
CNS collect info from around the body, handles the info, then sends out messages after instructs the body on how to respond.
Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)
Make up the nerves that carry messages to and from the CNS
Neurons
Specialised cells that transmit electrical messages from one part of the body to another at very high speed.
Nerve impulses
Electrical messages
Travel in only one direction
Neurotransmitter is a chemical message released at the end of an axon
Synapse is the space between two neurons
Cell body
Nucleus is the control centre of the cell
Dendrites are branches from the cell body that receive menages from other neutrons.
Axon is the nerve fiber that sends nerve impulses away from the cell.
Types of neurons
Motor neurons
Carry messages from the CNS to effectors
Connector neurons
Transmit messages between neutrons in the CNS.
Sensory neurons
Specialised receptors which carry messages to the brain and spinal cord from cells in the same organs
Myelin sheath is the insulating layer that covers a neuron.
Brain
Contains 100 billion neurons
Controls and regulates body functions.
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
Strong magnetic fields that are used to determine different types of body tissue.
