REGISTER

  1. Identification of a voice from concrete considerations: by what it expresses, by who uses it, by its subject matter and by its era.

  2. -Each word has a register ( or registers) in the context. -The set of registers gives us the register (or registers) of the text.

  3. TYPES

    • COMMON CONCEPTUAL REGISTER
      • -The CCR of a voice is the first meaning with which it becomes part of the language. E.g.: Pibe (Arg) -> common register for the passing of time, used by the majority of the Argentinean population.
        • -Common Conceptual Register = most common meaning.
          • -Are of a common conceptual register, all the words that have a single definition, a single meaning.
    • SPECIFIC CONCEPTUAL REGISTER
      • -A word has SCR when it is used with a specific meaning in a specific sector of the population.
        • -A voice that has a common register begins to be used by a specific set of people (profession) with a new meaning that is different from the common one. In the end, most of that group understands and uses the new voice with the new meaning.
          • -New meaning = word with a specific conceptual register.
            • -Specific conceptual register -->voices that do not come from a common register, become known and used by the majority of the members of a population.
    • GENERAL REGISTER
      • -Each word belongs to specific fields of language: terms; vulgar, colloquial, cultured, allegorical, technical. -The general register is independent of the "quantity" of the population that knows and uses the voice.
        • VULGAR REGISTER= voices and meanings that are rude, deformed or tawdry, and offensive. Voices that show poverty of vocabulary and slang are also included. E.g.: sudaca, chocho.
          • COLLOQUIAL REGISTER= words and expressions of more common use, barbarisms, deformed turns (understood and used by its population). E.g.: chatear, diga.
            • FORMAL/CULT REGISTER= precise voices, used by enlightened sectors of the population, voices with uncertain meaning for the population and with sporadic use in colloquial language. E.g.: adagio, confinar.
              • ALEGORIC REGISTER= voices used with a new, unconsolidated meaning. Allegorical terms do not only cover the poetic, but also the expressions used with a double meaning or intention, with an allusive connotation of another meaning. E.g.: caja tonta = for "television".
                • TECHNICAL REGISTER = proper of all words in their own meanings of technical fields. E.g.: pestaña = the salient part on the rim of a locomotive wheel.
    • THEMATIC REGISTER
      • - That is to say, it reflects its belonging to the different fields of knowledge. TR, elaborates the specialized vocabularies.
        • -Thematic register=addition of the words to the themes.

            • -->polythematics: they belong to different subjects according to the meaning with which they are used. E.g.: buttress (technical-industrial voice, also belongs to the theme architecture, military, geography).
              • -->athematics: words of common use, which cannot be assigned to any particular subject since they belong to everyone. Exm: pieza, número, vivir.
