Multi Store Model

1. Ecoding

   • Organising information so that it can be stored

2. Storage

   • keeping the information and not loosing it

3. Retrieval

   • Being able to recall information

4. What is it?

   • Suggests that it Is made up of one or more store which information can be transferred
   • Proposed by Baddely and Hitch

5. Short Term Memory (STM)

   • Temporary
   • 5+/-7 items
   • Lasts for up to 30 seconds
   • Maintenance Rehearsal

6. Long Term Memory (LTM)

   • Lasts up to a life times
   • Elaborative rehearsal

7. Strengths

   • Made a huge contribution to the understanding of memory
     • Provided the first overall structure and process of the memory system so it laid out the foubdation for other research into memory
   • Supports real life case of clive wearing
     • The case suggests that STM and LTM are separate stroes in different areas of the brain

8. Weaknesses

   • STM is no longer regarded as a single store
     • WOrking Mmeory Model contradicts the MSM and demonstrates that the MSM is made up of at least 3 other separate components
