Computer Software

1. Computer Software are the non physical parts of a computer system. Software includes all programs and instructions the hardware does.

2. Operating Systems

   • Operating Systems are programs in charge of the computer hardware. They also are the base for the application programs, as well as they act like a bridge between the user and the computer
     • Task and memory management
       • It's in charge of managing programs, giving them their resources and to keep them separated so they don't mess with each other.
     • Security management
       • As the name says, it's in charge of security. It asks the user for its username and password.
     • Providing a user interface
       • It provides the user an interface so he/she can interact with the computer system.
     • Communicating with hardware
       • Controls the external hardware devices attached to the computer.

3. Utility Software

   • This is the common denominator with all computer systems. It includes the basic "housekeeping" software programs.
     • Disk defragmentation
       • It makes better the hard disk performance by separating files into contiguous sectos.
     • Encryption
       • It secures files, folders and disks in case the computer is stolen or lost.
     • Anti-virus software
       • It protects the computer form malware or any other virus.
     • System updates
       • It updates the software with the latest improvements and bug fixes.

4. Application Software

   • Application Software allows the user to perform tasks to solve some problems by himself.
     • Desktop Publishing Software
       • Allow the creation of documents like leaflets, posters, brochures, etc.
     • Presentation Software
       • It is centered on the creation of slides in order for people to give verbal presentations to others. They are usually the size of the computer screen and not of a printed sheet.
     • Database software
       • It is used to create, structure and store data a collection of data about a certain item. It is commonly used by salesmen.
     • Web Browsers
       • It allows the user to navigate through the web, interpreting the information out of different archives.

5. Software Licences

   • Software Licences are restrictions that each type of software has.
     • Commercial Software
       • This type of software is the one that's sold for profit by the properties who create it.
     • Freeware
       • This type of software can be distributed by anyone and by no cost. However, copyright is still held by the author.
     • Public Domain
       • This type of software is the one which the creator has relinquished all rights. Meaning that anyone can use it, sell it and change it according to their own necessities.
