Cerebellum

1. consists of 2 cerebellar hemispheres & vermis (central area)

2. Function:

   • Correct voluntary muscle contraction & posture based on sensory data from body about actual movements
   • Sense of equilibrium

3. Cerebellar cortex & central nuclei are gray matter

4. Arbor vitae = tree of life = white matter

5. Superior, middle & inferior peduncles attach to brainstem

   • inferior carries sensory info from spinal cord
     • middle carries sensory fibers from cerebral cortex & basal ganglia
       • superior carries motor fibers that extend to motor control areas

6. May have role in cognition and language processing.

7. A deep groove known as the transverse fissure separates the cerebellum from the cerebrum
