Computer

  1. CPU

    • What does CPU stand for? CPU means Central Processing Unit.
    • What does CPU do? CPU is the brain of the computer where most of the calculations take place
    • What are the different parts of the CPU? The arithmetic logic unit (ALU), the control unit (CU) and the cache.
    • The arithmetic logic unit (ALU), which performs simple arithmetic and logical operations. The control unit (CU), which manages the various components of the computer. The cache, which serves as high-speed memory where instructions can be copied to and retrieved.
    • What is the clock speed? How is it measured? Why is this important? In a computer, clock speed refers to the number of pulses per second generated by an oscillator that sets the tempo for the processor. Clock speed is usually measured in MHz (megahertz, or millions of pulses per second) or GHz (gigahertz, or billions of pulses per second).
  2. RAM

    • What does RAM stand for? RAM means Read Access Memory.
    • What is stored in the RAM? These are some examples of what is stored in the RAM: the operating system, applications, the graphical user interface (GUI).
    • Is RAM volatile or non-volatile? What does this mean? The RAM is volatile, this means when the computer is shut down all the data not saved will be gone when you turn the computer back on.
  3. ROM

    • What does ROM stand for? ROM stands for Read Only Memory
    • What is stored in the ROM? ROM stores the instructions for the computer to start up when it is turned on again.
    • Is ROM volatile or non-volatile? What does this mean? ROM is non-volatile. Non-volatile is a term used to describe any memory or storage that is saved regardless if the power to the computer is on or off.
