Virtual memory
- Virtual memory is used when RAM is full
- Part of secondary storage is used as virtual memory (temporary RAM
- Data from RAM is moved to the secondary storage to make space in the RAM for new data
- When data in virtual memory is needed, it is moved back to the RAM
- Disadvantage
- Virtual memory is slower to access data compared to RAM
Secondary storage
- Use the term “secondary storage” (Not hard drive) You can use the terms “data” and “programs” when writing about memory or virtual memory
RAM
- Advantage
- RAM is quicker to access data compared to virtual memory
- Advantage
Program Counter
- Stores the address of the next instruction to be run.
Accumulator
- Stores the intermediate results of a calculation
Memory Address Register (MAR)
- Stores the address where the data will be fetched?written
Memory Data Register (MDR)
- Stores the data or instruction which is being fetched/written from memory
Diagnosing patients
- The speed in which we can access information
- The accuracy of information in which we can access
- How technology changes the amount of human interaction
- How technology can’t always replace the need for humans
- How technology can automate processes which used to take longer
- How computer systems can identify patterns
Treating patients
- How technology changes the amount of human interaction
- How technology can’t always replace the need for humans
- How technology can automate processes which used to take longer
- How computer systems can identify patterns
Storage of records
- The speed in which we can access information
- How all technology can keep data secure
- How technology can still be at risk of hacking
- How data can be stored centrally
- How data can be accessed in many locations around the world from different devices
- Privacy of information
Peer to peer
- All PCs have equal status (meaning there is no server managing or controlling the network)
- They share resources with each other (they are all over the network and not in one central point)
Client server
- All devices are managed/controlled by a server
- Can install software across the network
- Share printers with certain computers
- Control the access of computers to the Internet
MAC address
- 48 bit address
- Work at OSI layer2 (link layer)
- Physical adress
- Fixed, assigned by manufacturer
IP address
- 32 bit address
- works at OSI layer 3 (network layer)
- Logical address
- Can change depending on the network environment
