  1. Existing Text Based Adventure Games

    • Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy
      • The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a legendary 1984 text adventure game created by Infocom and Douglas Adams. Playing as Arthur Dent, you must survive the demolition of Earth, navigate the bizarre Starship Heart of Gold, and solve notoriously illogical, punishing puzzles—including the infamous Babel Fish dilemma—using text commands.
        • Weakness: No clear starting point , unclear commands, limited instructions, confusing puzzles, trial and error, easy to get stuck, no visual graphics.
        • Strength: Uses funny dialogue, has unusual puzzles making it interesting and has funny characters
    • Forest of Lyrica
      • The Forest of Lyrica is a classic text-based adventure game built using HTML5 and JavaScript. Navigating a retro-style grid map, players type simple directional and action commands to explore unique mystical ruins, manage a backpack inventory, and solve puzzles. The ultimate quest challenges you to find a magical flute and slay a sleeping dragon to save the realm.
        • Weakness: Forest of Lyrica is a tiny nine-room game with no story or choices. Its typing system breaks easily, and the puzzles are too simple. There is also no obvious starting point making it hard to play
        • Strength: Once you get past the first barrier of not knowing where to start it is very easy game for beginers.
  2. Prescribed Criteria

    • • Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
      • The game must offer 10 or more choices throughout your play through.
      • The game must include different choices
      • The game must make those choices relevant to the plot/setting
    • • You must have at least two choices for each input. IE. Yes | No, Left | Right, Buy | Sell
      • Have at least 2 choices the player can choose from.
      • Have at least 2 different options the player can choose to go to/do.
      • The player's decisions must affect outcomes later in the game.
    • • You must use a WHILE Loop
      • The game must stop repeating when the player reaches an ending.
      • The game must allow the player to make multiple decisions in one game instead of making one choice then ending the game once something has been done.
      • The game must use a WHILE loop somewhere within the code
    • • You must use variables that match your storyline
      • The choice must fit the theme of the game
      • Use variables to represent the condition of the Military compound, or during the mission
      • Use variables to represent possible outcomes that match with the storyline.
  3. Ideas for Story

    • Horror
      • Horror games are designed to evoke fear and tension through immersive environments, narrative, and gameplay mechanics that make players feel vulnerable and engaged.
        • Clock Tower (1995) – A point-and-click horror adventure where players are stalked by the Scissorman, relying on wits rather than weapons to survive
    • Escape Game
      • An escape game, also known as an escape room, is a cooperative game where players are locked in a themed room and must use clues, solve puzzles, and complete tasks to escape within a limited time.
        • Bob the Robber: A classic heist game where players navigate through various venues, each with increasing security.
    • Military Mission
      • A military game, often referred to as a wargame, is a strategy game where players command opposing armed forces in a simulation of armed conflict. The primary purpose of military games is to train military officers in strategic thinking, test new tactics, and predict future conflicts. They can simulate various aspects of warfare, including land, naval, and air combat, and are used for both recreation and professional training.
        • ARMA 3: A premier military simulator offering large-scale combat sandbox experiences. It focuses on extreme realism, tactical team coordination, and massive maps. Players experience authentic physics, realistic weapon handling, and a highly dedicated modding community that creates endless scenarios.
  4. Self-Determined Criteria

    • You must make a game that has multiple endings
      • Must have choices the player can pick
      • There must be different endings, not only death
      • The game must give the player 2 or more choices to pick from
    • You must use a choice at the end of the Game, that picks your future... e.g you have completed your mission and now rturning home, would you like to retire, or continue serving. If retire you live happy life, if continue serving "you die a few years later to a land mine".
      • The player must be offered multiple choices to pick from (2 or more)
      • The choice will effect the storyline/plot of the game
      • The choice must be realistic and relate to the theme of the game.
  5. Algorithm Constructs

    • Sequence
      • A sequence refers to order—the idea that operations or elements are executed from first to last unless control flow changes it.
        • print("You enter the command deck") print("You see a communication system") action = input("Do you want to contact Earth? ")
    • Assignments
      • In coding, an assignment is the process of giving a value to a variable, allowing the program to store and manipulate data.
        • score = 0 score = score + 10
    • Selection & Conditions
      • Selection
        • onditions: These are statements that evaluate a variable or expression to determine if a certain condition is true or false. For example, if (x > 0) checks if the variable x is greater than zero
            • if engine fixed == true: print("the shuttle starts successfully") Else: print ("the shuttles engine wont start")
      • Condition
        • Selection: This is the part of the code that follows the condition statement. It can take one of two paths based on the condition's truth value.
    • Iteration
      • Repeats a block of code while a condition is true or for a set number of times
        • while game_over == False: print("Where do you want to go?") choice = input("Choose a location: ")
    • Modularisation
      • Breaks a program into smaller, reusable sections usually using functions. This makes code easier to organise, understand and maintain
        • def show_success(): print("MISSION SUCCESS!") print("YOU HAVE REACHED EARTH") show_success() (Not in my code)
  6. Coding Constructs

    • If statements
      • An IF statement checks whether a condition is true and decides which code to run. ELSE runs if the condition is false
        • IF engines_fixed == True: print("The shuttle starts successfully") ELSE: print("The shuttle engines won't start")
    • FOR Loop
      • A WHILE loop repeats a block of code while a condition remains true. it can keep the game running until the player reaches an ending
        • while game_over == False: print("Where do you want to go?") choice = input("Choose a location: ")
