Programming
Algotihms
- Solving problems 1 stem at a time
- Processors can only process 1 instruction at a time
- Mainly exressed as a flow chart
- Make sure you know the symbols
Pseudocode
- Used for planning algortithms
- Should allow a programmer to write in any language
- Key words are written in capital letters (eg INPUT, IF, WHILE)
High level / low level programming
- Low level is understood by the processor
- Machine code
- Binary code for each instruction and register location
- Assembly language
- Code specific to a type of processor
- e.g INP, LDA, OUT
- Written as each instruction would be processed
- Machine code
- High level has to be translated
- Uses language that is easier to understand by humans
- Has to be translated
- e.g Python, BASIC, Javascritp
- Low level is understood by the processor
Translation
- Assembler
- Only can be used in low level programming
- Turns assembly language into machine code
- Compiler
- Creates an executable file to run the program
- Once it is compiled it doesn't need the original source code
- Would be used for proprietary softare
- Interpreter
- Executes the source code directly
- Used when creating a program
- Would be used on open source software
- Assembler
Control flow
- Sequencing
- The order through an algorithm
- Selection
- IF THEN ELSE
- Iteration
- Loops
- WHILE or FOR
- Loops
- Sequencing
Data types
- Variable or constant
- Variable changes during the program
- Constant stays the same e.g Pi
- Integers and real numbers
- Integer is a whole number
- Real (sometimes called float) can have decimal values
- Arrays are lists of the same data types
- Opertaions are mathematical symbols eg < > + -
- Variable or constant
Testing
- Syntax error
- Not a correct command for the coding language being used
- Run-time error
- An error in the program eg stuck in a loop
- Logical error
- Human error within the construction of the algorithm
- Syntax error
