      1. Direct = external force (tackle)
        1. Indirect = intrinsic force (torn ligament - sprinting)
        2. Soft and Hard Tissue
          1. Soft = everything but bone and teeth
            1. Hard = bone and teeth
            2. Overuse
              1. Overuse of a specific body region
                1. running on hard surfaces (shin splints)
              2. Soft Tissue Injuries
                1. Tears,sprains and contusions
                  1. tears = tissue stretched or severed
                    1. sprains = streching or tearing a ligament
                      1. strains = muscle or tendon is streched
                      2. Skin abrasions, lacerations, blisters
                        1. abrasions = scraped skin on hard surface
                          1. laceration = irregular tear of flesh
                            1. blisters = collection of fluid under skin
                            2. Inflammatory response
                              1. phase 1 = inflammatory stage
                                1. phase 2 = repair stage
                                  1. phase 3 = remodeling stage
                                2. Hard tissue injuries
