1. What are atoms?

   • Atoms consist of electrons surrounding a nucleus that contains PROTONS and NEUTRONS
     • Neutrons: Neutral charge
     • Protons: Positive Charge
       • Protons- relative charge of +1
     • Electrons- relative charge of -1
     • The atomic number is the number of protons it contains
       • Number of electrons is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus
       • the mass number of an element is the total of protons and neutrons it contains
       • For example: Seaborgium Atomic number:266 and the number of protons is 106. 266-106=160 neutrons

2. Electronic structure

   • The electrons in a atom occupy energy levels
     • these are called SHELLS
