File Permissions

  1. We can use the ls -l command to see the permissions of the files in the current directory, use ls --help to know more about the ls command.

      • The results display, from left to the right: file permissions, number of links, owner name, owner group, file size, date of last modification, file name.
        • in the file permissions block:
          • The first character is - or l or d, d indicates a directory, a line represents a file, l is a symlink (or soft link)
          • Three sets of characters, three times, indicating permissions for owner, group and other: r = readable w = writable x = executable
          • How to change the file permissions:
            • chmod is a Linux command that will let you set permissions
              • chmod permissions file
                • chmod 644 myDoc.txt
                  • 4 read (r), 2 write (w), 1 execute (x)
                    • so: 6=read+write for owner
                    • 4= read for group and others
                  • Or, you can add or remove just the permissions of the owner, group or others: chmod u+rwx,g+r,o-w filename (you just need to put o, g or o, a (all), + or -, and the permissions)
