Pyramids of Biomass and Numbers

1. Each bar on pyramid shows the mass of living material at that stage.

2. Biomass pyramid are always in a pyramid shape because biomass is lost at each stage in the food chain.

3. To construct a biomass pyramid you need the dry biomass of the organism

   • This may be difficult as you might have to kill organisms.

4. Pyramid of numbers shows the number of organisms at that stage of the food chain- not their mass.
