1. 1st Law

   • Amount of energy in the universe is constant
     • Energy can be transferred & transformed, but not created or destroyed

2. 2nd Law

   • Energy conversions reduce the order of the universe and increase its entropy
     • Some energy becomes unusable
       • Some energy is converted to heat
         • Associated with random molecular motion
         • Cells cannot use heat to perform work
         • Lost to surroundings
           • Release leads to entropy
   • Entropy
     • Disorder
