Secondary Storage

Secondary Storage

1. Solid State(flash) Storage

   • Advantage
     • Faster than hard disk drives
     • has no mechanical parts
     • Low power consumption
   • Disadvantage
     • Lifespan
     • Cost
     • Storage
   • examples
     • memory sticks
     • memory cards

2. Magnetic Storage

   • Advantage
     • Persistence
       • The biggest advantage is persistence of data.
     • Capacity
     • Cost
   • Disadvantage
     • durability
       • if any area of the tape is damaged or broken, it can lead to the entire role being useless
     • small amount of space
   • examples
     • magnetic tape
     • hard-disk drives

3. Optical Storage

   • Advantage
     • Mass storage capacity
     • Long media life.
     • High data stability
   • Disadvantage
     • disk capacity
   • examples
     • Tape.
     • Floppy Disk

4. Secondary storage is non-volatile. it is needed in a computer system to store programs, operating systems and files.

   • non-volatile:not being able to detect when power is not connected to it
