  2. Perspectives that define educational technology

    • Educational technology is viewed as both processes and tools
      • It is important to begin examining four different historical perspectives
        • Perspective #1: Educational technology as comunications media
          • In this perspective, instructors proposed that media delivered information in concrete and effective ways
            • The view of educational technology as delivered media has dominated areas of education
        • Perspective #2: educational technology as instructional systems and insrtuctional design
          • Due to World War II military and industrial trainers needed personnel quickly so they advocated using media to develop effective materials, procedures, etc. with technology
            • This perspective has evolved into human performance technology to improve human productivity and competence
        • Perspective #3: Educational technology as vocational training
          • They believed that an important function of school learning is to prepare students for their work and vocational training can be a practical means of teaching content
            • This view brought a shift in vocational training getting K-12 schools away from industrial arts curricula centered in woodworking printing shops
        • Perspective #4: Educational technology as computer systems
          • As computers began to transform, teachers began to see that computers also had the potential to aid instruction, this perspective encompassed both instructional and administrative support applications
            • Educational computing became educational tecnology
  3. How the past has shaped the present

    • Era 1: the pre-microcomputer era
      • teachers began using computer systems only since microcomputers came into common use, but before this universities were using systems to develop computer assisted instrucrion via long distance connections
    • Era 2: The microcomputer Era
      • Integrate circuits made computers smaller and portable so teachers began to bring them into the classrooms, they were called microcomputers
        • Districts began to purchase networked integrated learning systems , three other technology initiatives were, the computer literacy movement, videodisc-based curriculum and the logo movement
    • Era 3: The internet Era
      • Internet open the doors to the first browser softer designed to allow users to use hyperlinks, with this interest for technology sprang to life again.
        • Websites became a primary form of communication for educators, this use of internet created virtual schools wew students and teachers are separated by time interacting via computers
    • Era 4: Mobile Technologies, social media, and open access Era
      • In early 2000's when portable devices made internet access, some constant connectedness transformed educational practice, the ease of access to online resources drove several moments
        • Distance learning
        • Electronic books
        • Mobile access
        • Open acces
  4. Today's educational technology resources: systems and applications

    • Technology Facilities: Hardware and configurations for teaching
      • Microcomputers
        • Sometimes reffered to as desktops or laptops, remain a mainstay of classroom computing
      • Handheld technologies
        • even smaller devices that mke easier to teachers and students to view communicate and share information
      • Display technologies
        • Devices that support whole-class demonstrations or information from a computer
      • Imaging technologies
        • these devices allow the development and ise of images ranging from still photos to full-motion videos
      • External storage
        • Sometimes a device is needed to hold large files that won't fit easily on storage media or made a backup copy
      • Laboratories of networked computers
        • These are easier to maintain and secure; networking software can monitor individual performance in groups
      • Computer arrangements in classrooms
        • These are more convenient and accessible to both teachers and students, but teachers may stretch available units when there are not enough for each student to have one
      • Peripherals
        • Input devices, such as keyboards that make microcomputers more functional
  5. Conditions that shape practice

    • Social issues
      • Privacy issues
        • GPS technologies can pinpoint the exact location of someone, so it is dangerous to expose personal information without user's knowledge
      • Health-related concerns
        • problems such as hearing loss from headphones, or time spent at videogames can affect physical health of people
      • Malaware, viruses, spam, and hacking
        • Malaware are malicious software can damage, destroy, distrupt operations or spy on the operation of computers
    • Educational Issues
      • Lack of technology funding
        • Recent economic downturns have meant decreased education funding, this downturn comes at a time when technology expenses are on the rise
      • Reliance on online learning
        • Increasing numbers of virtual courses are being offered, and virtual schools are becoming mainstream part of U.S. education, but not all students have skills needed to use them
