The simple present

1. Form

   • Affirmative
     • You speak English.
     • I word in London.
   • Negative
     • always use the auxiliary "do/ does " for negations and the infinitive of the verb.
       • Example with "do"
         • I do not clean the room.
       • Example with "does"
         • He does not clean the room.
   • Interrogative
     • you need the auxiliary "do/does" and the infinitive of the verb.
       • Do I play football?
       • Does he play football?

2. Expresses an action in the present taking place once, never or several times.

3. Uses of the simple present

   • To express habits, general truths, repeated actions or unchanging situations, emotions and wishes:
     • I work in London. (unchanging situation)
   • To give instructions or directions:
     • You walk for two hundred meters.
   • To give your opinion:
     • I like ice cream.
   • To talk about schedules:
     • The library opens at eight.
   • To give facts:
     • The earth circles the sun.

4. The spelling of the simple present

   • When the verb ends with "s", "sh", "ch", "x", "z" or "o" we add "es".
     • watch -waches
     • wash-washes
   • When the verb ends with "y" and there is vowel before it, you add "s", if there is consonant before it, you omit the "y" and you add "ies".
     • Play-plays
     • Cry- cries
   • when the verb ends in a consonat other than "s, sh, ch, x, z" we add "s"
     • Drink-drinks
