1Enzymes are [blank_start]globular[blank_end] proteins. They have an active site, which has a specific shape, and is the part that the [blank_start]substrate[blank_end] binds to. The shape of the active site is determined by the [blank_start]tertiary structure[blank_end] of the protein. However, this can be changed in [blank_start]high temperatures[blank_end] or [blank_start]extreme pH[blank_end], when the [blank_start]bonds[blank_end] are broken, and the substrate cannot bind to it.

4what is an enzyme substrate complex?
- Athe enzyme before the substrate is bound to it
- Bthe enzyme after the substrate has been released
- Cthe enzyme-substrate molecule formed when they are bound together

7some factors are [blank_start]inorganic[blank_end] molecules or ions. they work by helping the enzyme and substrate to bind together. they dont directly participate in the reaction so arent used up or changed in any way. for example, [blank_start]chloride[blank_end] ions are cofactors for the enzyme amylase.
some cofactors are [blank_start]organic[blank_end] molecules, these are called [blank_start]coenzymes[blank_end]. they participate in the reaction and are changed by it but are recycled between reactions. they act as carriers, moving chemical groups between different enzymes.
if a cofactor is tightly bound to the enzyme, its known as a [blank_start]prosthetic[blank_end] group. for example [blank_start]zinc[blank_end] ions are a prosthetic group for carbonic anhydrase. the ions are a [blank_start]permanent[blank_end] part of the enzyme's active site- Ainorganic

8[blank_start]Competitive[blank_end] inhibitor molecules have a similar shape to that of the [blank_start]substrate[blank_end] molecules. They [blank_start]compete[blank_end] with the substrate molecules to bind to the [blank_start]active site[blank_end], but no reaction takes place. Instead, they block the active site, so no substrate molecules can enter.
How much the enzyme is inhibited depends on the relative [blank_start]concentrations[blank_end] of the inhibitor and the substrate. If there's a [blank_start]high[blank_end] concentration of the inhibitor, it'll take up nearly all the active sites and hardly any of the substrate will get to the enzyme. But, if there's a higher concentration of [blank_start]substrate[blank_end], then the substrates chances of getting to an active site before the inhibitor increase. So [blank_start]increasing[blank_end] the concentration of substrate will increase the rate of reaction up to a point- ACompetitive

9non-competitive inhibitors bind to the enzyme at the active site
- AVerdadero

10inhibitors can be reversible or irreversible, depending on how [blank_start]strong[blank_end] their bonds are;
if they are strong [blank_start]covalent[blank_end] bonds, the inhibitor is hard to remove and so the inhibition is [blank_start]irreversible[blank_end]
if they are weaker [blank_start]hydrogen[blank_end] or weak [blank_start]ionic[blank_end] bonds, the inhibitor is easily removed and so the inhibition is [blank_start]reversible[blank_end]- Astrong
- Bcovalent
- Cirreversible
- Dhydrogen
- Eionic
- Freversible
