  1. 1What is a router? If the LAN is connected to the internet, you need a router.
Routers work by sending data between networks like over the internet, it tells the data where to go.
  2. 2What is a LAN?A LAN is a local area network. It is a connected set of computers and other devices. Each device is called a node (e,.g a computer) A LAN is installed on one site relatively small.
  3. 3What is a WAN?A WAN is a wide area network. It covers a large geographical area. It uses telephone lines, satellites and radio waves to connect e.g International banking systems, ATM machines and the Internet.
  4. 4What is a switch? It is a device that connects nodes together. It is an intelligent device that can send data to the computers that the data is made for. This reduces network slowness because it is making the network run faster.
  5. 5What is a Hub?A hub is a device that connects computers together. It is not intelligent because data is sent to all the computers across the whole of the network. Cheap devices: USB hubs are useful in home computer installations.
  6. 6What is a wireless Access Point? It is in computer networks, a wireless access point is a device that allows people to connect devices on a wireless LAN to a wire based network.
  7. 7What is needed to make a LAN?You need at least two computers (nodes). Each of them have a NIC- network interface card, they can be either wired or wireless.
  8. 8What is a Network Interface Card? They convert the data signals from the computers into data signals that can be transferred across the network.
  9. 9What is a computer network?A computer network is two or more computers connected together to share information.
  10. 10What are the advantages of a computer network?Advantages: Sharing devices such as printers saves money. Site (software) Files can easily be shared between users. Network users can communicate by email and instant messenger.
  11. 11What are the disadvantages of a computer network?Purchasing the network cabling and file servers can be expensive. Managing a large network is complicated, requires training and a network manager usually needs to be employed. If the file server breaks down the files on the file server become inaccessible. Email might still work if it is on a separate server. The computers can still be used but are isolated. Viruses can spread to other computers throughout a computer network.. There is a danger of hacking, particularly with wan Security procedures are needed to prevent such abuse, eg a firewall.
  12. 12What is the difference between a Hub and a Switch?A switch is intelligent because it can send data to the computers that the data is meant for unlike the hub which is unintelligent because the data is sent to all the computers across the whole of the network.
  13. 13What is the internet? The internet is a global network of computers. All computer devices (including PCs, laptops, games consoles and smartphones) that are connected to the internet form part of this network. Added together, there are billions of computers connected to the internet, all able to communicate with each other.
  14. 14What is the world wide web?The internet is a global network of computers. The World Wide Web is the part of the internet that can be accessed through websites. Websites consist of webpages which allow you to see information. Websites are accessed using a web browser. A browser is a program designed to display the information held on a website. Every website has an address at which it can be found, a bit like a house address.
  15. 15What is the purpose of a Modem?A modem receives information from your isp through phone lines, coaxial wires or optical fibre.it then converts it into a digital signal.your isp and router transmits different signal types so the modem converts it all into the same signal type so your isp and router can communicate directly with each other.
  16. 16What is the purpose of an ISP?Internet service provider also known as isp is a company/organisation which can then provide access to the internet this can be done in various forms such as commercial community-owned non profit or otherwise privately owned.
  17. 17What is an IP address?A unique string of numbers separated by full stops that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network.
  18. 18What does HTTP stand for?HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure, and instead of acting as its own application layer protocol, it uses separate protocols called SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security).
