  1. 1—. LINE CONFIGURATION
    . TOPOLOGY
    . TRANSMISSION MODE
    . CATEGORIES OF NETWORKS
    . INTERNETWORKS
. LINE CONFIGURATION . TOPOLOGY . TRANSMISSION MODE . CATEGORIES OF NETWORKS . INTERNETWORKS
  2. 2—. Attachment of communication devices to a link
. Link is a pathway that transfers data
    . Two possible line configurations-
    1. Point to Point
    2. Multi point
. Attachment of communication devices to a link . Link is a pathway that transfers data . Two possible line configurations- 1. Point to P...
  3. 3POINT TO POINT LINE CONFIGURATION. Dedicated link between two devices
. Connected through cable or wire but also satellite or microwave is possible.
    POINT TO POINT LINE CONFIGURATION
  4. 4MULTI POINT LINE CONFIGURATION. More than two devices connected through a single link.
. Also known as Multi drop configuration
. Spatially shared link configuration and Time shared configuration
    MULTI POINT LINE CONFIGURATION
  5. 5—. Physical or Logical arrangement of links in a network
. Gives the geometrical representation of all the links and the linking devices(nodes)
. Five basic topologies are Mesh, Star, Bus, Ring and Tree
. Physical or Logical arrangement of links in a network . Gives the geometrical representation of all the links and the linking devices(n...
  6. 6MESH TOPOLOGY. Every device has a dedicated point to point link to other device, direct traffic between the devices
    . n(n-1)/2 channels to connect n devices
. Every device must have (n-1) I/O ports to accommodate the links
. Advantages- Each connection can carry its own data load, Robust, Privacy and Security
. Disadvantages- Amount of cabling and Number of I/O ports required
    MESH TOPOLOGY
  7. 7STAR TOPOLOGY. Each device has a point to point link only to a central controller called as Hub
. Every device plugs directly to the hub
. The controller acts as an Exchange
. Needs only one link and one I/O port
    . Advantages include Robustness
. Requires far less cable than mesh
    STAR TOPOLOGY
  8. 8TREE TOPOLOGY. It is a variation of Star topology
. Not every device has a direct connection with the central hub, secondary hub comes into picture
. Central hub is the active hub and has a Repeater, Secondary may be active or passive
    TREE TOPOLOGY
  9. 9BUS TOPOLOGY. Bus topology is an example of Multi point configuration.
. One long cable acts as a backbone to link all the devices-Drop lines-Taps
    . Advantages include less cabling
. Disadvantages include difficulties in adding new devices-needs modification and backbone replacement
    BUS TOPOLOGY
  10. 10RING TOPOLOGY.Each device has a dedicated point to point line configuration with two devices on either side of it
. Each device incorporates a repeater
. Alarms are issued by an device if it doesn't receive any signal within specified time
. n cable links are required to connect n devices
. Easy to install and reconfigure are the advantages while Un-directional traffic stands as an disadvantage
    RING TOPOLOGY
  11. 11HYBRID TOPOLOGIES. It is a type of network topology that uses two or more differing network topologies
. Includes a mix of bus topology, mesh topology, ring topology, star topology, and tree topology.
    HYBRID TOPOLOGIES
  12. 12TRANSMISSION MODE. Refers to the mechanism of transferring data between two devices connected over a network.
. 3 types of transmission modes-
    TRANSMISSION MODE
  13. 13SIMPLEX MODE. Communication is Uni-directional
. One of the two stations can only produce input while other can only accept it
    SIMPLEX MODE
  14. 14HALF-DUPLEX MODE. In half-duplex ,data can move in two directions, but not at the same time.
    . An example of a half-duplex device is a walkie-talkie, a two-way radio that has a push-to-talk button
    HALF-DUPLEX MODE
  15. 15FULL-DUPLEX MODE. In this, both the stations can receive and send data simultaneously.
. Best example is the Telephone network
    FULL-DUPLEX MODE
  16. 16CATEGORIES OF NETWORK. 3 primary network categories
. Depending on its size, ownership, distance it covers and its physical architecture
    CATEGORIES OF NETWORK
  17. 17LAN(LOCAL AREA NETWORK). Group of computers connected to each other in a small area such as building, office.
. Data is transferred at an extremely faster rate
    . Provides higher security.
    LAN(LOCAL AREA NETWORK)
  18. 18MAN(METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK). Covers a larger geographic area by interconnecting a different LAN to form a larger network.
. Government agencies use MAN to connect to the citizens and private industries.
    MAN(METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK)
  19. 19WAN(WIDE AREA NETWORK). It is a network that extends over a large geographical area such as states or countries.
. It is used in the field of Business, government, and education.
    WAN(WIDE AREA NETWORK)
  20. 20INTERNETWORKS. Internetworking is the practice of interconnecting multiple computer networks
    . Routers and Gateways
    INTERNETWORKS
  21. 21THE ENDThank you
