3.3.1 - Transport in plants

Fichas del conjunto (19)
- 1What are dicotyledonous plants?Plants with two seed leaves and a branching pattern of veins in the leaf.
- 2Why do plants need a transport system? To move water from the roots up to the leaves and to move sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant. Diffusion can meet all demands for gaseous exchange so this is not a reason.
- 3What does the plant transport system consist of?Xylem and Phloem.
- 4What is the function of Xylem tissue? To transport water and mineral ions upwards.
- 5What is the function of Phloem tissue? To transport assimilates such as sugars up or down the plant to where they are required.
- 6What is NOT transported by the xylem and phloem tissues?Gasses.
- 7Where is xylem tissue found in the root?In the center of the vascular tissue in the shape of a star/cross.

- 8Where is phloem tissue found in the root?Phloem is situated between the points of the "cross" made by the xylem tissue.

- 9What's the group cells around the vascular bundle called in the root? The endodermis.
(dark red in image)
- 10What is located just inside the endodermis? What's special about these cells and what are they called?Row of meristem cells called the pericycle, they remain able to divide.
- 11Where are the vascular bundles found in non-woody plant stems?Near the outer edge of the stem, in separate bundles.
(provides strength and flexibility) - 12Where are the vascular bundles found in woody plant stems?Near the outer edge in one continuous ring.
(provides strength and flexibility) - 13Where is sclerenchyma found in the stem?Outside the phloem in the vascular bundles.
- 14Where is the cortex in the stem?Outside the vascular bundles.
- 15Where is the collenchyma found in the stem?At the outermost edge of the stem.
- 16What is the central part of the plant stem called? The medulla.
- 17Where is the cambium (row of meristem cells) found in the stem?Between the xylem and phloem cella.
- 18In a leaf, describe how the xylem and phloem are positioned.Xylem on top of the phloem (form the central midrib.
- 19What is the purpose of the sieve plates? To become blocked if callose is displaced to prevent the loss of sap.
