Methods in Language Teaching

Cards in this deck (8)
- 1METHODS IN LANGUAGE TEACHING What role do students play in each language teaching method?

- 2Grammatical TranslationGrammar is studied deductively, i.e. they are given grammar rules and examples and then asked to apply them.

- 3Direct MethodThey learn mainly oral skills, where the teacher asks guided questions that require students to give the only correct answer, based on repetitions so that students can say complete sentences without syntax or pronunciation errors.

- 4Audio-lingual methodWith the teacher's help in monitoring the learners' linguistic behavior, they provide a good model for imitation, respond accurately and quickly.
Grammar is more easily induced from examples; no explicit grammatical rules are provided.
- 5Silent Way MethodIn this method students encourage autonomy since the teacher speaks only when necessary so students have more practice because students have to learn to listen to and trust others and themselves.

- 6Suggestopedia MethodStudents learn through long audios where teachers read the dialogue to classical music and students follow the text by checking the translation.

- 7Total Physical Response (TPR) MethodStudents listen and respond physically to commands because it focuses on vocabulary and grammatical structures over other language areas, using very little of the students' native language in the classroom.

- 8Communicative Language Teaching Method (CLT)Students communicate with other students and with the teacher, trying to negotiate meaning, understand and be understood. And it is very important to know that students are considered managers of their own learning.
