- 1WHAT ARE THE MODALS VERBS?The modals verbs are auxiliary verbs that can not function as a main verb, unlike auxiliary verbs "be", "do" and "have" that they can function as a main verb
- 2CANIt indicate skill or ability. In these cases it can be translated as "power" in Spanish. Examples:
- I can speak five languages
- Bill and Tom can´t help you - 3COULDIndicate skill or ability in the pass or in the future. It can be interrogative and is more formal than "can". Examples:
- I couldn´t sleep last night
- Could you help me? - 4MAYIndicate possibilities in the future. It can also be used to give permission or instructions. In interrogative sentences is more educated than "can" and "could". Examples:
- You may leave it you like
-May I leave now? - 5MIGHTIndicate possibilities in present and future. It can also be used to ask permission. Examples:
- You might call her tomorrow
- You might go out more often - 6SOME SENTENCES TO PRACTICE* .............................. you help me?
* Start eating without me, I........................be late
* I.......................... eat my diner last night, my stomach hurt.
* Glen........................ come with us to the cinema if he finished his work - 7WILLIt is used to form the future tense and means will or determination. In interrogative sentences "will" is used to request information or a favor. Examples:
- I wiil hep you
- Will they find a cure for cancer? - 8SHALLIt is used to form the future tense and is ism "will" only that its use is more common in Britain as it is the most polite. It is also used for offers, suggestions or preferences. Examples:
- Chris shall be happy to see you
- Shall we go to the cinema or a museum? - 9SHOULDIt indicates an obligation or recommendation. It's like the conditional "should" in Spanish. Examples:
- I should call my parents more often
- You shouldn´t work so hard - 10SOME SENTENCES TO PRACTICE* They.............................. practice more if they want to win the championship.
* I know it's difficult, but we ....................... to succeed!
* I.........................l be there if I can - 11OUGHT TOIt´s a synonymous of "should". Examples:
- She ought to quit smoking
- I ought to call my parents more often - 12MUSTIt indicates an obligation, prohibition or need. You can also use "have to". Examples:
- You must read this book
- You mustn't drink this water - 13WOULDIt´s used to declare a preference and to ask for some kind of educatment. Examples:
- She would like to go to New York someday.
- Would you like some coffee. - 14SOME SENTENCES TO PRACTICE* You ..........................not drink and drive
* I........................ like to go to California someday
