PSYC 301 - Lecture 1

Cards in this deck (18)

  1. 1What are the two types of learning? Give examples for each...1. The world : Declarative ‘knowing that = Explicit ex... Attributes...Past events...General information... Meaning of concepts...Significance of things
    2. How the world works: Procedural = Implicit ex...Skilled actions...Cognitive abilities
  2. 2What is the psychological definition of learning?Version 1 - Learning is the acquisition of a new behaviour due to exposure to a similar situation in the past Behaviour is any activity of an organism that can be observed or somehow measured. The activity may be in response to stimuli that are either internal or external.
  3. 3What are the problems with the psychological definition of learning? Not always “acquisition” of new behavior
Changes in behaviour may not always be due to learning: short-term changes
    a) Fatigue / b) Change in stimulus conditions / c) Alterations in physiological/motivational state / long-term changes / a) Maturation
  4. 4What is the difference between performance and learning?Similar but NOT the same
    Many factors can underlie performance
    Fear, hunger/thirst, exhaustion etc…..
which contribute to whether a learned behaviour is observed
Must control as many factors as possible to confirm that observed behaviour is a reflection of learning
  5. 5What is latent learning? Give an example of an experiment...“Latent Learning” – behaviour is learned, but remains initially dormant. May be expressed in situations that are non-similar to those in which it was learned
Tolman and Honzik, 1930 - Rat Maze
What is latent learning? Give an example of an experiment...
  6. 6The behaviourists updated the definition of learning to account for findings like latent learning... What is the new definition?Learning is a relatively long-lasting change in the mechanism of behaviour, or behaviour potential, that occurs as a result of practice or experience
  7. 7What is the biological definition of learning? What is the biological definition of learning?
  8. 8Describe the organisation of the nervous systemDescribe the organisation of the nervous system
  9. 9What are the regions of the spinal cord? What reflexes is it known for? What are the regions of the spinal cord? What reflexes is it known for?
  10. 10What are the elements of the cell membrane? What are the elements of the cell membrane?
  11. 11Describe the stages of an action potential...Describe the stages of an action potential...
  12. 12Why do we use animal models? Why do we use animal models?
  13. 13Will rats smoke? Recall the nicotine self-administration experiment in ratsWill rats smoke? Recall the nicotine self-administration experiment in ratsWill rats smoke? Recall the nicotine self-administration experiment in rats
  14. 14What is the General Process Approach (GPA) ?What is the General Process Approach (GPA) ?
  15. 15What are the implications of GPA theory for research? What are the implications of GPA theory for research?
  16. 16What 2 things constitute a good animal model?What 2 things constitute a good animal model?
  17. 17How do you choose the right model? How do you choose the right model?
