Flashcards
System Architecture 1.1
Cards in this deck (7)
- 1System Architecture 1.1The processor is the brains, it is the part of the computer that executes all the instructions and processes data.
It has a clock speed which measures the number of cycles per second, and is measured in Hertz. - 2Processor SpeedThe processor is measured in Hertz(Hz).
A 1 GHz processor can execute 1 billion instructions per second and 2 GHz executes 2 billion instructions. - 3Processor-coresEach processor has a core, which then executes the instructions independently. You may find some processors have:
Dual cores, Quad cores, 8 cores.
A quad core would execute instructions 4 times quicker than a dual core - 4Processors - Cache SizeProcessors have cache - they are very fast, and they only take small amounts of memory in the processor chip. Any instructions that are commonly executed, the cache stores them, i acts as a link between the main memory and the processor.
- 5Affecting the performanceClock speed-Doubling the clock speed, doubles the number of instructions executed per second. Cores-Adding more cores to the processor increases the number of instructions executed per second.Cache size- Increasing cache reduces the disk transfers, which quickens the processing of instructions
- 6Embedded SystemsEmbedded systems are both made of hardware and software, sometimes known as firmware which are used for specialized tasks. An example would be a dishwasher
. - 7Processor - RegistersPC-Program Counter
Holds the location of the next instruction in the main memory
MAR-Memory Address Register
The contents of PC are copied here and then transferred along the Address Bus.
