Mnemonic Device | A learning technique that helps with remembering |
Elaborative Rehearsal | Repeating the meaning of a word rather than the actual word. Ex: Remembering the definition of neuron and not neuron. (Info transfer STM to LTM) |
Proactive Interference | When old information messes with new information. Ex: Calling your present mate your past mates name. |
Retroactive Inference | When new info messes with old info. Ex: Getting a new bus number yet, forgetting your old one. |
State Dependent Memory | Whatever is learned in a certain state will be remembered better once in the original state. Ex: Learning about cats when depressed 3 years ago. You get depressed again and you know all about cats. |
Eidetic Memory (Photographic Memory) | Ability to remember certain visual images in greater detail. |
Confabulation | Disturbance of memory; Adding in detail that wasn't there. |
Recall | Stored memory that requires more processing to get out. (Long-Term) |
Recognition | Stored memory that doesn't require as much processing since you're familiar with whatever it is. |
Hippocampus | Center of emotion and memory; Hippo sat on you at camp last summer (Bad Memory) |
Declarative Memory | Things that you are certain of and know that you can tell others and be sure of it; "Knowing That" |

Episodic Memory | Memorable events that are stored for a lifetime. Ex: Getting married |
Semantic Memory | General Knowledge that have been learned over many interactions. Ex: Knowing that an apple is edible and can satisfy hunger. |
Long Term Memory (LTM) | Where memory is stored for a long period of time |
Primacy-recency Effect | Tendency to remember things only at the beginning and ending of a list |
Chunking | Combining items separately together to remember the objective better. Ex: Grouping cold foods in a shopping list and/or grouping warm foods together |
Maintenance Rehearsal | Repeating something to oneself to remember without going into detail of the meaning |
Short term Memory (STM) | 7 items (MAX); Learned items that are only around for a short time. |
Iconic Memory | This is your sight/visual memory that is held for almost a second |
Echoic Memory | This is hearing memory which is held for longer than iconic just by a couple seconds. |
Sensory Memory | Brief Memory that stored for a certain part in the brain Ex: Your dog barking stores in echoic memory part. |
