Cards in this deck (27)

  1. 1What is a computer network?two or more computers connected together to share information and resources.
  2. 2Describe a LANa LAN is a local area network a LAN is installed on 1 site it is relatively small and is owned by the organisation.
  3. 3Describe a WANa WAN covers a large geographical area it uses cables, telephones, lines, satellites and radio waves to connect.
  4. 4What are the advantages of a computer network?-the whole network can be backed up centrally
-messages can be sent between users
-users can share files which prevents duplication of information.
  5. 5What are the disadvantages of a computer network?-a trained person is needed to manage the network
-wiring can be expensive to buy and install
-security is an issue as a virus could affect all computers
-if the network is down all computers are out of use
-external communication equipment can be expensive to run.
  6. 6What devices are needed to produce a LAN?-cable connectors
    -power supply
    -HUB/switch/router
    -network software
  7. 7What is the purpose of a NIC?the NIC contains electronic security required to communicate using a wired connection
  8. 8What is the purpose of a Router? The main purpose of a router is to connect multiple networks and forward packets destined either for its own networks or other networks. A router is considered a layer-3 device because its primary forwarding decision is based on the information in the layer-3 IP packet, specifically the destination IP address.
  9. 9What is the purpose of a Hub?A hub, also called a network hub, is a common connection point for devices in a network. Hubs are devices commonly used to connect segments of a LAN. The hub contains multiple ports. When a packet arrives at one port, it is copied to the other ports so that all segments of the LAN can see all packets.
  10. 10What is the purpose of a Switch? The basic function that any switch is supposed to perform is to receive information from any source connected to it and dispatch that information to the appropriate destination only. This thing differentiates switches from hubs. Hub gets the information and forwards that to every other device in the network
  11. 11What is the purpose of a WAP?A wireless access point (WAP) is a hardware device or configured node on a local area network (LAN) that allows wireless capable devices and wired networks to connect through a wireless standard, including Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
  12. 12What is the difference between a Hub and a Switch? What's the difference between a Ethernet hub, a switch, and a router? Ethernet hubs, switches, and routers are all devices that let you connect one or more computers to other computers, networked devices, or even other networks.
  13. 13What is the Internet?global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols
  14. 14What is the World Wide Web?an information system on the Internet which allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to search for information by moving from one document to another.
  15. 15What is the purpose of an ISP?An Internet service provider (ISP) is an organization that provides services accessing and using the Internet. Internet service providers may be organized in various forms, such as commercial, community-owned, non-profit, or otherwise privately owned.
  16. 16What is an IP address?a unique string of numbers separated by full stops that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network.
  17. 17What does HTTP stand for?HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure, and instead of acting as its own application layer protocol, it uses separate protocols called SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security).
  18. 18What is a URL?the address of a World Wide Web page.
  19. 19How is a URL constructed?A URL can be thought of as the "address" of a web page and is sometimes referred to informally as a "web address." ... A URL is made up of several parts. The first part is the protocol, which tells the web browser what sort of server it will be talking to in order to fetch the URL.
  20. 20What are the three different network topologies?Mesh Topology. Mesh Topology: In a mesh network, devices are connected with many redundant interconnections between network nodes. ...
Star Topology. Star Topology: In a star network devices are connected to a central computer, called a hub. ...
    Bus Topology. ...
    Ring Topology. ...
    Tree Topology.
  21. 21What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Star topology?Star Topology: Advantages and Disadvantages. In Star topology, all the components of network are connected to the central device called “hub” which may be a hub, a router or a switch. ... So it can be said that every computer is indirectly connected to every other node by the help of “hub”.
  22. 22What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Ring topology?Disadvantages of ring topology. All data being transferred over the network must pass through each workstation on the network, which can make it slower than a star topology. ... The hardware needed to connect each workstation to the network is more expensive than Ethernet cards and hubs/switches.
  23. 23What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Bus topology?Alternatively referred to as a line topology, a bus topology is a network setup in which each computer and network device are connected to a single cable or backbone. The following sections contain both the advantages and disadvantages of using a bus topology with your devices.
  24. 24List examples of data that need to be kept secure-making regular backups of files (backup copies should be stored in fireproof safes or in another building)
-protecting yourself against viruses by running anti-virus software
-using a system of passwords so that access to data is restricted
-safe storage of important files stored on removable disks, eg locked away in - a fireproof and waterproof safe
allowing only authorised staff into certain computer areas, eg by controlling entry -to these areas by means of ID cards or magnetic swipe cards
-always logging off or turning terminals off and if possible locking them
-avoiding accidental deletion of files by write-protecting disks
-using data encryption techniques to code data so that it makes no apparent sense
  25. 25What is HTTPS and what is it used for?HTTP is the underlying protocol used by the World Wide Web and this protocol defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands.
  26. 26What is encryption?the process of converting information or data into a code, especially to prevent unauthorized access.
"I use encryption to protect sensitive information transmitted online"
  27. 27What is decryption?Definition - What does Decryption mean?
Decryption is the process of transforming data that has been rendered unreadable through encryption back to its unencrypted form. In decryption, the system extracts and converts the garbled data and transforms it to texts and images that are easily understandable not only by the reader but also by the system. Decryption may be accomplished manually or automatically. It may also be performed with a set of keys or passwords.
