A guide to first aid
Cards in this deck (18)
- 1How do you remove foreign material from the mouth of an unconscious casualty?- place in recovery position
- open airway with chin lift
- clear airway - 2List steps in giving chest compressions to an adult / child (over 1 year)- kneel beside patient, one knee level with head and the other with the patient's chest
- locate lower half of sternum (breastbone) in the centre of chest
- do not apply pressure over ribs, upper abdomen or bottom part of sternum - 3How do you give rescue breaths to an infant?- tilt head and lift chin (only slightly)
- only use 2 fingers when doing chin lift
- avoid pressure under chin - 4Why is it important to lift the chin?To bring tongue away from back of throat
- 5List steps to place adult / child (over 1 year) in recovery position- kneel beside patient
- place furthest arm at right angle to body
- place nearer arm across chest
- lift nearer leg at knee so it is fully bent upwards
- roll patient away from you on to side while supporting head and neck, with other hand against their raised knee
- keep leg at right angles with knee touching ground
- place patient's hand under chin to stop the head from tilting and to keep airway open
- tilt head slightly downwards to allow for drainage of any foreign material - 6What is the recovery position for an infant (under 1 year)?- lay infant face down on an adult's forearm
- support head with hand - 7If a woman requiring CPR appears to be in an advanced state of pregnancy, how should she be positioned?- position on her back with shoulders flat
- place padding under her right buttock to tilt pelvis to the left
- if there is not enough padding available to achieve a definite tilt, a second person should the patient's abdomen to the left side while CPR is performed - 8When should mouth-to-nose breaths be given instead of mouth-to-mouth?- jaw / teeth are broken

- keep patient's head tilted back
- close patient's mouth
- place thumb on lower lip to keep mouth closed
- support jaw

- 11What is the aim of CPR?To maintain blood flow so that oxygen can be circulated to the brain and vital organs
- 12How do you clear an infant's airway? With infant in recovery position, clear their mouth of foreign material with little finger
- 13If rescue breaths do not make the chest rise with each attempt, what should you do?- give 30 compressions
- check casualty's mouth and remove any visible obstructions
- ensure there is adequate head tilt and chin lift
- ensure there is an adequate seal around the mouth - 14For a young child and infant, what should you modify in regards to rescue breaths and why?- the force of the breaths
- if delivered too forcefully, air will be directed into the stomach, which may cause the child to vomit and obstruct the airway - 15The air you breathe out of your lungs contains how much oxygen?About 16%
- 16Which side should you place an unconscious woman in advanced pregnancy?Left side, unless prevented by injuries
- 17When should you turn over a casualty in the recovery position to the other side?If the casualty is to remain in the recovery position for more than 30 mins
- 18During CPR, what should the 2nd person attend to?- airway (ETT, LAM (laryngeal mask airway)
- oxygen
- IV access
